Is William & Mary or Princeton worth the money for undergrad?

I’m trying to decide whether the extra cost of a more expensive school is actually worth it. William & Mary seems like a strong option, but Princeton is the kind of place people say has a huge name advantage.

As a student who cares about getting a good education and a solid outcome after college, I’m wondering how to think about the value difference between the two.

Princeton is worth the extra money only if the price difference is manageable for your family without heavy debt, because the academic and career upside is real but William & Mary is already an excellent undergraduate institution. Princeton offers unusually strong undergraduate focus and broader national and international name recognition, while William & Mary is known for strong teaching, especially in the humanities and social sciences, at a much lower cost.

One major differentiator is access to resources. Princeton puts exceptional money into undergraduates: small classes, funded research, generous support for internships and independent work, and a campus culture built around undergrad education rather than graduate programs dominating the experience. That can translate into easier access to faculty, more funded opportunities, and stronger institutional support for ambitious academic projects.

Another is reach of the degree. Princeton’s name carries more weight across finance, consulting, top graduate schools, and national recruiting pipelines. That does not mean William & Mary students do not place well, because they do, especially in government, law, public policy, and East Coast professional circles. But Princeton opens more doors automatically, especially if you are not yet sure what field you want or want maximum flexibility.

The financial side matters most. If choosing Princeton means substantial loans or financial strain, William & Mary can easily be the smarter value because it still delivers a serious education, strong alumni outcomes, and respected academics. If the difference is affordable, Princeton’s extra cost is easier to justify because you are paying not just for prestige, but for a deeper pool of opportunities and a degree with broader long-term signaling power.
