Is William & Mary or Cornell worth it for undergrad?
I’m a high school junior trying to figure out whether these schools are actually worth the cost and effort for undergrad. Both seem strong, but I keep hearing very different things about the student experience and how much the name matters after graduation.
I’m mainly trying to understand whether either one gives enough value overall to justify choosing it.

The biggest practical tradeoff is cost versus reach: William & Mary often delivers excellent undergraduate teaching and a loyal alumni network at a much lower price, while Cornell offers broader academic scale, more research infrastructure, and a name that tends to travel more nationally and internationally. William & Mary is known for a close-knit undergraduate focus, small discussion-heavy classes, and especially strong outcomes in areas like government, public policy, history, and pre-law. Cornell brings far more majors, lab access, professional-school connections, and recruiting depth, especially in engineering, business-related paths, hotel administration, architecture, some sciences, and certain tech and finance pipelines.
If you are likely to pay in-state or receive strong aid at William & Mary, it is very often worth it. It has a strong academic reputation, serious students, and professors who are notably engaged with undergrads. For many careers, especially ones that do not require a highly specialized recruiting ecosystem, the gap in outcomes will not be large enough to justify a major price jump.
Cornell is worth it more selectively. It can be a smart investment if the cost is manageable for your family and you want one of the fields where Cornell’s size and employer connections noticeably change your opportunities. Its alumni network is huge, the course catalog is much wider, and the university offers access to graduate-level resources that William & Mary simply cannot match.
The student experience is also meaningfully different. William & Mary tends to feel smaller, more intimate, and more undergraduate-centered. Cornell can feel more intense, more expansive, and sometimes less personal at first, but it also gives you many more academic and extracurricular niches to grow into.
My honest view is that Cornell is the stronger name and the more powerful platform, but only worth choosing if the extra cost is not severe or if your goals clearly line up with what Cornell does unusually well. If the price difference is large, especially with in-state William & Mary, William & Mary is one of the clearest high-value undergraduate options in the country.
