The biggest difference is setting. Northeastern sits right in the city, and that changes how students spend their time. A lot of socializing happens both on campus and around Boston, so the atmosphere often feels busier, more outgoing, and less isolated than at RPI.

RPI has a more traditional campus-centered social life in Troy, and the vibe is often described as more academically intense and more STEM-heavy. Students absolutely do make close friends there, but the social scene can feel narrower because the school is smaller, and a lot of activity revolves around clubs, residence halls, and a smaller local area.

Another concrete difference is how easy it is to meet new people over time. Northeastern’s co-op system means students move in and out of class schedules and work terms, which can make friendships less static but also exposes you to a wider range of people and experiences. At RPI, social circles can feel tighter and more consistent, which some students like, but it can also make the campus feel less broadly social if you do not click with your immediate community early on.
