University of Illinois at Urbana–Champaign vs University of Rochester for optics and photonics: which is better for undergraduate study?

I’m a high school senior looking at colleges for optics and photonics, and these two schools keep coming up. I know both have strong science and engineering programs, but I’m trying to figure out which one is generally better for an undergrad who wants to study optics and photonics.

I’m mainly interested in the overall strength of the program and the opportunities it might lead to during college.

UIUC gives you a large, very broad engineering environment with strong physics, electrical engineering, materials, and research infrastructure, while Rochester offers a more concentrated optics ecosystem built around one of the most recognizable undergraduate pathways in optics and photonics. If your priority is optics and photonics itself, not just science and engineering overall, Rochester is the stronger undergraduate choice. UIUC becomes especially compelling if you want a larger engineering campus and want to keep one foot in optics while preserving more flexibility across major STEM areas.
