Which is better for undergraduate teaching: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Dartmouth?

For undergraduate teaching specifically, Dartmouth usually offers the stronger day-to-day classroom experience for most students. It is a much smaller undergraduate-focused school, classes are more often discussion-based, and undergrads typically have easier access to full professors. If your top priority is close faculty interaction and a campus built around teaching undergraduates, Dartmouth has a real advantage.

Dartmouth tends to fit students who want professors to know them well, who like seminar-style classes, and who want a college where undergraduates are the clear center of the academic environment. In many departments, office hours, advising, and recommendation-letter relationships are simply easier to build because the scale is smaller.

UIUC makes more sense for students who want outstanding academics but are comfortable being more proactive. It is a large public research university, so introductory classes can be big and some courses are taught by TAs or lecturers, especially in high-demand fields. That said, UIUC has many excellent professors, strong honors options, and serious depth across departments, so students who seek out office hours, smaller upper-level courses, and research opportunities can still get a very strong undergraduate education.

UIUC is especially appealing for students who value breadth, specialized majors, and the energy of a major research campus. In areas like engineering, computer science, and other technical fields, the academic resources are enormous. The tradeoff is that access often depends more on your initiative, while at Dartmouth the structure itself makes close faculty contact more common.

So if you are judging primarily on teaching access and classroom feel, Dartmouth comes out ahead. UIUC can still be excellent, but Dartmouth is more consistently designed around the kind of intimate undergraduate teaching experience you’re describing.
