How does Williams admissions difficulty compare with Bowdoin for undergraduate applicants?

Williams and Bowdoin are both extremely selective liberal arts colleges, and in overall admissions difficulty they are very close. Williams is often viewed as having a slight edge in selectivity and national academic reputation, but not by a wide enough margin that an applicant should treat one as clearly “safe” compared with the other. In practice, a student who is competitive for Williams is usually also in the running for Bowdoin, and a denial from either school can happen even with very strong grades, courses, and activities.

Williams tends to attract applicants who are drawn to an intensely academic, discussion-heavy environment with especially strong visibility in the liberal arts. If you are looking at Williams, it makes sense to assume a very high bar across academics, writing, and overall fit.

Bowdoin appeals strongly to students who want a top liberal arts college with a slightly more understated, collaborative, and outdoors-oriented campus culture. That does not make it meaningfully easier in any broad sense. Its applicant pool is still packed with high-achieving students, and Bowdoin’s popularity, especially among students who want a selective New England LAC with a warm campus feel, keeps admissions very tough.

For list-building, I would place them in the same selectivity tier. If you are narrowing your list, the more useful distinction is not “Which one is easier?” but “Which campus, academic style, and community fit me better?” because admissions difficulty is similar enough that preference and fit should drive the comparison more than trying to game a small difference in odds.
