University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Boston University for marketing: which is the better choice for undergrad?
I’m trying to decide between UIUC and BU for marketing, and I keep seeing different opinions about both schools. I know they are pretty different in size and location, and I’m mostly focused on which one would give me a stronger marketing education and better career opportunities after graduation.
I’m a high school senior trying to narrow down my college list, so I want to understand how they compare for an undergraduate marketing major.

For undergraduate marketing, Boston University has the edge for most students because of its location, internship access during the school year, and the way Questrom ties business study to a major-city job market. BU students can tap into Boston’s concentration of advertising, media, tech, healthcare, and brand-side employers without needing to leave campus for the semester, which matters a lot in marketing. Questrom also has a smaller, more urban feel than UIUC, and that often translates into easier access to networking events, employer talks, and part-time experience while classes are in session.
The biggest differentiator is internship timing and proximity to employers. Marketing is a field where experience often matters as much as coursework, and BU’s Boston location makes in-semester internships much more realistic. Being in a city also helps with agency visits, alumni coffee chats, and project-based opportunities with companies nearby, which can make your resume stronger before senior year.
UIUC’s advantage is scale and value. Gies College of Business is very well respected, and Illinois has a large alumni network with solid recruiting across business functions. If cost is meaningfully lower for you, that can be a serious point in UIUC’s favor, especially since marketing does not require taking on heavy debt to access the field. You would still get a strong business education there, but the surrounding environment is less naturally plugged into day-to-day marketing internships than BU’s.
BU also offers a setting that fits marketing especially well because the city itself becomes part of the education. You are surrounded by brands, startups, nonprofits, sports organizations, and media companies, so classroom ideas about consumer behavior, branding, and communications feel closer to real practice. That kind of immediate exposure is harder to replicate in a classic college-town environment.
If you want a bigger campus, more traditional school spirit, and potentially a stronger overall value proposition, UIUC may be more appealing. But on the specific question of undergrad marketing education plus career runway, BU comes out ahead.
