How should I approach the Colby College supplemental essay?

I'm starting to work on my Colby College application, and I'm a little unsure about how to tackle their supplemental essay. For anyone who has already written it or is familiar with the prompt, did you focus on academics, extracurriculars, or something else Colby-specific?

I'm interested in a lot of things, but I don't want my essay to come off as generic or like it could be sent to any college. Did you mention any professors or programs, or is it better to talk about experiences that have shaped you? Any advice on specific things Colby looks for would be super helpful.

I'm just trying to make my essay stand out and feel unique to Colby. If anyone has examples (not looking to copy anything, of course, just to see structure/flow), that would be awesome!

The Colby College supplemental essay is often a version of the classic "Why Us?" prompt, where they look for evidence that you’ve researched Colby specifically and can articulate precisely why you want to be part of their community. To make your essay compelling and avoid sounding generic, you should focus on Colby’s distinct features and connect them clearly to your own interests and experiences.

Start by digging deep into what makes Colby unique, beyond the surface-level facts. For example, Colby’s DavisConnects program, which integrates global, internship, and research opportunities, could be a focus if you’re excited about hands-on learning. The school’s commitment to sustainability—like its carbon neutrality—could also be meaningful if you’re passionate about environmental action. Mentioning specific initiatives, traditions, or even a professor whose work excites you shows you’re genuinely interested in Colby, not just applying broadly.

Balance this by reflecting on moments from your life that connect with what Colby offers. For example, if you spearheaded a community project related to environmental justice, and Colby’s Environmental Studies program and the Buck Lab for Climate and Environment inspire you, use that connection. Tell a brief story: maybe you organized river clean-ups in your town and love that Colby students participate in local and regional sustainability efforts, too. Add a layer of how you hope to expand or contribute to those efforts while on campus.

While academics and extracurriculars are good to include, it’s the fusion of your passions and what Colby specifically provides that will help your essay stand out. A strong structure might look like: a) an engaging personal story or insight that sets up your interests, b) a clear connection to Colby’s offerings (with details, not just a list), and c) reflection on how this match will help you grow both on campus and after graduation.

Avoid being too broad (don’t just say you like “small class sizes” or “liberal arts values”) and instead pick out two or three elements that only Colby can offer—then show why those matter to you, personally. Essentially, your essay should be one that only you could write, and that only makes sense for Colby College.

Example (in part):
“I’ve spent countless Saturday mornings rebuilding bikes for my local youth cycling club—when I found out Colby’s Bikes4Kids program donates refurbished bikes and hosts workshops in Waterville, I saw my commitment to community service and hands-on work mirrored in the student ethos there. I can’t wait to join that team and help expand their reach while exploring the social impact of technology through Colby’s Science, Technology, and Society department.”
