Is McGill or Georgetown better for international relations?

Georgetown is the stronger name for international relations. Its School of Foreign Service is one of the most established and specialized IR programs in the world, the university sits in Washington, DC, and that location matters a lot for internships during the school year with embassies, think tanks, NGOs, and federal agencies.

Academically, Georgetown has a deeper IR-specific infrastructure. The School of Foreign Service was built around diplomacy, global politics, economics, regional studies, and policy, so students are surrounded by classmates, faculty, courses, and events centered on international affairs from the start. McGill is very well respected and offers strong political science and international development options, but it is not as singularly identified with international relations in the same way Georgetown is.

For networking, Georgetown has a major edge because of its alumni presence in diplomacy, public service, consulting, global nonprofits, and policy circles, especially in DC. That ecosystem creates more routine access to guest speakers, policy practitioners, embassy events, and part-time semester internships that are unusually relevant for IR students. At McGill, the network is strong and international, but it is broader and less concentrated in the day-to-day institutions that many IR students want to enter.

For career preparation, Georgetown makes it easier to pair classes with real-world experience during the academic year rather than only in the summer. That can matter a lot if your goal is to graduate with multiple policy-facing internships already on your resume. McGill is still an excellent option, especially if you want a more international campus, lower cost, or a path that may lean more toward global research, Canada-based policy, or multilingual international work, but in a head-to-head comparison for IR, Georgetown has the clearer advantage.
