McGill vs University of Toronto: Which is better for international undergraduate students?

The biggest practical tradeoff is setting: McGill offers a more compact, cohesive undergraduate experience in bilingual Montreal, while the University of Toronto offers broader scale and program choice in Canada’s largest city. Both teach most undergraduate courses in English, but daily life in Montreal rewards at least some willingness to navigate French. Toronto is easier to manage entirely in English, though housing and everyday costs are often more difficult to contain.

McGill’s downtown campus tends to feel more immediately social and navigable for a new international student. Its smaller overall undergraduate environment can make clubs, residence life, and campus routines feel more connected, and Montreal’s student-oriented neighborhoods are a major part of the experience.

U of T has exceptional academic breadth, research access, and a large international community, particularly at the St. George campus. The tradeoff is that it can feel more impersonal at first: introductory classes may be very large, and students often need to be proactive about office hours, advising, and building community. The college system at St. George can provide a smaller home base, while the Mississauga and Scarborough campuses have distinct, less downtown-centered experiences.

For the stronger overall international undergraduate experience, McGill has a slight edge for many students because its campus and city life are easier to experience as one connected community. U of T is the more compelling choice when a specific program, research opportunity, or the professional network of Toronto materially fits your goals better; that academic match should outweigh the general atmosphere comparison.
