When does Harvard's fall 2024 semester actually start?
I've been trying to finalize my plans for next year and I'm getting a bit confused about when Harvard University’s fall 2024 semester is supposed to begin. I checked their academic calendar but I keep seeing different dates for when classes start and when move-in is, and I want to make sure I don't book flights or make commitments that would conflict.
If any current students or other incoming freshmen know the exact date for when we’re expected to be on campus and when classes officially start, I’d really appreciate some clarification. Is there a different date for freshmen orientation, too? I’d love to hear how it worked for previous years if someone remembers. Thanks in advance!

Harvard’s academic calendar can definitely be a little confusing at first because there are a few different important dates depending on your year and housing status, not just a single "start" day.
For the fall semester, here's how the timeline generally breaks down:
All Freshman live in dorms within the Harvard Yard, and only Freshman live in the yard (all upperclassmen live in the "House" system outside of the Yard). Move-in for incoming freshmen usually happens a few days before classes begin to allow for orientation activities, sometime known as "Camp Harvard". Freshman Orientation kicks off immediately after move-in and typically runs for about a week. That means you’ll want to plan to be on campus about a week before classes start so you can fully participate in orientation events, meet your roommates, and get settled in.
Upperclassmen move in closer to the start of classes, often just a couple of days before the semester begins.
Classes for all undergraduates usually start in early September. So, if you’re booking flights or making plans, you’ll want to arrive for move-in in mid-late August, attend all orientation activities, and then remember that your academic schedule kicks off early in September.
