What is the quarter system experience at Northwestern compared with Harvard’s semester system?

For most students who value depth and a steadier weekly workload, Harvard’s semester system will feel more comfortable; Northwestern’s quarter system is more appealing for students who enjoy a fast pace and frequent new subjects.

At Northwestern, students commonly take three or four courses at once, but they complete more separate courses over four years because they have three main terms annually. That can make it easier to sample across fields, add a minor, pursue multiple interests, or recover from one course that turns out not to be a fit. The tradeoff is that missing even a few classes, falling behind on reading, or delaying a paper can be harder to absorb because the term ends quickly.

Harvard’s semester structure gives more room to sit with difficult material, build relationships with professors over a longer period, and handle long research assignments or cumulative problem sets without quite the same compression. A four-course semester can still be demanding, but the rhythm tends to allow more time to revise work, seek help, and explore an idea beyond the first introduction to it.
