Is Lehigh or RPI worth the cost for engineering?

For engineering, RPI has the clearer edge on pure technical reputation and employer recognition, but whether either school is worth a high price depends on the size of the gap versus your cheaper options. RPI is especially well known in engineering and technology fields, and Lehigh is also respected but tends to have a broader balance across engineering, business, and undergraduate campus life. If the cost difference is large enough to mean major debt, neither name is strong enough to justify stretching far beyond what your family can reasonably afford.

On internships and early career outcomes, RPI benefits from being a very engineering-centered school with deep ties to technical employers and a student body heavily concentrated in STEM. That can translate into a stronger engineering peer environment, more specialized recruiting, and a brand that lands immediately with certain engineering firms. Lehigh still places engineering students well, but its recruiting ecosystem is a bit more mixed because the university is not as singularly focused on engineering.

On long-term value, the biggest factor is usually not prestige in the abstract but how easily the school helps you get strong experience during college. Lehigh can be attractive if you want engineering with more flexibility, stronger cross-over options into finance, product, or management, and a more traditional campus culture. RPI tends to carry more weight if you expect to stay squarely in technical engineering or computing roles, where the school’s identity is more tightly aligned with the work.

For cost, I would only pay a significant premium for RPI or Lehigh if the premium is still manageable without heavy borrowing. In engineering, outcomes depend a lot on internships, projects, GPA, and practical experience, so a less expensive ABET-accredited option can deliver excellent value. Between the two, RPI has the stronger case for paying extra, but not at a debt level that would limit your choices after graduation.
