Which city is better for college internships: Tulane in New Orleans or University of San Francisco in San Francisco?

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale versus accessibility: San Francisco offers a much larger and denser internship market across industries, while New Orleans can feel more navigable and relationship-driven but has a smaller pool of openings. During the school year, being at USF puts you near a constant stream of employers in tech, finance, startups, healthcare, nonprofits, media, and law. Tulane benefits from being embedded in New Orleans, but the local economy is narrower, with stronger visibility in public health, hospitality, culture, energy, law, education, and community-based work.

For sheer internship volume, San Francisco has the edge. A USF student can realistically pursue part-time internships during the semester with companies and organizations throughout the city and broader Bay Area, and there is simply more employer density nearby. That matters because access is not just about prestige, it is about having enough options that you can pivot if one application cycle does not go well.

Tulane is still strong in certain lanes, especially if your interests connect to New Orleans itself. The city can be excellent for hands-on work in public service, healthcare systems, urban issues, arts administration, music and cultural institutions, and hospitality-related business. In some of those spaces, students can build connections quickly because the professional community is smaller and more personal.

Over the summer, the difference becomes less important if you are willing to leave campus and intern elsewhere. But if you want the strongest odds of finding good opportunities both during the academic year and locally in summer, USF is the more favorable setup. The Bay Area ecosystem is broader, faster-moving, and more saturated with internships.
