Which school offers better undergraduate research opportunities: Case Western or Columbia?

I’m trying to compare the research opportunities at Case Western and Columbia as a potential premed/biology student. I know both schools are strong academically, but I’m mostly interested in how easy it is for undergrads to get involved in labs and meaningful research early on.

The biggest practical tradeoff is accessibility versus sheer scale and prestige. Case Western usually makes it easier for undergraduates to get into labs earlier and build closer working relationships with faculty, while Columbia offers enormous research depth through its medical center and New York connections but can feel more competitive and layered. For a premed biology student who wants hands-on research soon, that difference matters more than the headline reputation of either school.

At Case Western, undergraduate research is very central to the student experience. Its close ties to the Cleveland Clinic, University Hospitals, and the broader health and biotech ecosystem around campus create a lot of medically relevant research options. Students often find that professors and labs are quite open to undergraduates, and the school has a reputation for making research feel normal rather than reserved for a small inner circle.

The upside is breadth: many subfields, high-powered labs, and access to cutting-edge work. The downside is that undergraduates are one part of a much larger research university, so getting into the most sought-after labs can require more persistence, networking, and patience.

In terms of culture, Case Western tends to be more undergraduate-facing. At Columbia, support exists, but the environment can be more graduate and professional school centered, which sometimes means undergrads need to advocate for themselves more actively. That does not mean undergrads are shut out at Columbia, only that the path can be less straightforward.

For meaningful research early on, I would give Case Western the edge on access and consistency. Columbia may offer the higher ceiling in terms of lab prestige and range, but Case Western is often the place where an undergraduate can more reliably start sooner, get mentoring, and become genuinely useful in a lab without as much competition for attention.
