Is William & Mary or University of Maryland worth the cost for an out-of-state student?

For most out-of-state students, University of Maryland tends to be easier to justify at full price than William & Mary because it offers a broader range of high-demand majors, a larger research ecosystem, and stronger access to nearby internships and employers. Maryland’s location near Washington, DC is a real value factor, especially for students interested in government, policy, business, computer science, engineering, public health, or research-heavy fields. William & Mary can absolutely be worth it, but usually only if you specifically want its smaller, discussion-driven liberal arts environment and a program there that fits you unusually well.

Maryland gives you more academic flexibility for the money. It has a much larger university structure, more course options, more specialized majors, and more built-in pathways into big labs, companies, and federal agencies. That matters because out-of-state cost is easier to defend when a school offers both strong academics and a wide safety net in case your interests change.

William & Mary’s biggest advantage is the undergraduate classroom experience. Classes tend to feel more personal, the campus culture is more intimate, and the school is especially appealing for students who want close faculty interaction in the humanities, social sciences, international relations, government, or certain pre-law paths. If that style of education is exactly what you want, the higher cost can feel more worthwhile than a bigger, more sprawling public university.

Campus experience is also pretty different. Maryland has more of the classic large flagship energy, with bigger athletics, more student organizations, and a busier suburban setting. William & Mary is quieter, more traditional, and more centered on academics and campus community than major-school spectacle.

In pure value terms, though, many out-of-state families find that neither school is an automatic bargain without merit aid. If costs end up similar, Maryland often has the stronger return because of its scale and opportunities. If William & Mary comes in meaningfully cheaper, or if you strongly prefer a smaller intellectual campus, that can change the equation fast.
