Is the University of Maryland or Michigan State University considered more prestigious?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and both of these schools seem like solid options. I’ve heard different opinions from people around me about which one has the stronger overall reputation.

I’m mostly wondering how they are generally viewed by students, employers, and people who know college rankings.

The biggest practical tradeoff is that Maryland tends to carry more national-name recognition for academics, especially because of its location near Washington, DC and its strength in fields like computer science, engineering, public policy, and government-related work, while Michigan State has a very solid reputation but is often known more for its large-campus experience, alumni network, and certain standout programs rather than a stronger overall prestige profile.

In broad reputation terms, the University of Maryland is usually viewed as the more prestigious of the two.

That said, Michigan State is absolutely not a weak option. It has a large, loyal alumni base, Big Ten visibility, and strong programs in areas like supply chain, business, education, communications, agriculture, and hospitality.

If your question is strictly about overall prestige, Maryland has the edge. If your question is about which school will open more doors in a specific major, the answer can shift, because MSU has real strengths that can outweigh broad reputation depending on what you want to study.
