The biggest practical tradeoff is location and scale: Boston University gives you day-to-day access to a much larger internship market during the school year, while Pepperdine offers a smaller, more personal environment but is farther from the main business and media centers of Los Angeles. BU students can realistically intern part time in Boston during fall or spring because the campus is woven into the city. Pepperdine students often rely more on summer internships, commuting, or concentrated networking trips into LA, Santa Monica, or Century City.

For internship access alone, BU has the clearer edge. Boston has dense opportunities in finance, healthcare, biotech, government, nonprofits, education, tech, and media, and BU’s urban setup makes it easier to combine classes with in-semester work experience. That matters because repeated part-time internships during the academic year can build a stronger resume than waiting mostly for summers.

Pepperdine still has real advantages, especially if you want a close-knit campus and are targeting entertainment, business, law, or nonprofit spaces connected to greater LA. The challenge is logistics. Malibu is beautiful, but it is not the same as being based in the middle of a major internship hub, so transportation and time can shape what is realistically available during the week.

Another factor is employer visibility. BU benefits from being a large, well-known university in a city full of hospitals, firms, startups, and organizations that regularly hire students. Pepperdine has strong alumni connections and a respected name, but its internship ecosystem tends to depend more on intentional networking and planning rather than constant proximity.
