Pepperdine vs UC Davis for communications: which is better for an undergrad degree?
I'm trying to decide between Pepperdine and UC Davis for communications and keep going back and forth. I want a school with a strong communications program and good opportunities to build experience for internships or jobs after college.
I'm a current high school senior and I’m mainly comparing the overall value of the major at each school, not just the campus vibe.

For communications specifically, Pepperdine often makes more sense if you want a more communication-centered undergraduate experience with smaller classes, closer faculty contact, and easier access to media internships in the Los Angeles area. UC Davis is a strong university overall, but its communication-related options are a bit less straightforward if you are looking for a classic, professionally focused communications major from day one. The better choice depends less on prestige and more on whether you want a targeted communications environment or a broader large-university platform.
Pepperdine fits the student who wants the major itself to feel central to the college experience. Its Communication Studies program is an established undergraduate offering, and being in Malibu with proximity to LA can matter for internships in entertainment, media, public relations, marketing, and digital content. At the undergraduate level, that combination of location, smaller scale, and faculty accessibility can make it easier to build a resume early rather than waiting to compete through a huge campus system.
UC Davis fits the student who wants a large public research university with lots of campus resources and is comfortable being more self-directed. Davis is excellent for students who may want to combine communication-related study with areas like political science, psychology, sociology, technology, or marketing-oriented work. But if what you want is a clearly branded communications pathway with strong industry adjacency, Davis can feel less direct than Pepperdine.
Value matters too. If UC Davis is much cheaper for you, that can outweigh program differences, especially in a field like communications where internships, portfolio work, writing ability, and networking often matter as much as the school name. But if cost is reasonably close, Pepperdine has the clearer edge for an undergrad whose top priority is communications itself and building hands-on experience tied to that major.
