Purdue or BU for biology: which is better for undergraduate biology?

For undergraduate biology, Boston University has the edge for most students focused on biology itself, especially if you want a dense research environment, major hospital access, and strong preparation for pre-med or biomedical graduate study. BU’s location in Boston puts you near major medical centers and biotech institutions, and its biology-related opportunities extend well beyond campus. Purdue is a very strong university, but its biggest national strengths lean more toward engineering, agriculture, and applied sciences than toward biology in the same city-connected way.

One major difference is research access tied to location. At BU, biology students are in a city filled with hospitals, labs, and biotech employers, which can make it easier to find medically connected research, clinical exposure, and internships during the school year. That matters if you are considering pre-med, molecular biology, neuroscience-adjacent work, or biomedical research, because the ecosystem around BU adds a lot to the undergraduate experience.

Another differentiator is the feel of the biology program itself.
