Yale carries more weight on a resume in overall name recognition and broad prestige, while RPI’s reputation is strongest in engineering and technical circles. Most employers, grad programs, and people outside your field will recognize Yale immediately, and that brand travels across industries like consulting, finance, policy, law, medicine, and academia. RPI is respected, especially for engineering, computer science, and applied technical work, but its prestige is more specialized and less universal.

One concrete difference is how the name reads to people who are not experts in your field. A Yale degree tends to signal selectivity and strong academic preparation to almost any recruiter or admissions reader, even if they know little about your major. RPI often gets that reaction from engineering employers who know the school well, but not as consistently from employers in nontechnical fields.

For grad school, the school name matters some, but your grades, research, recommendations, and actual work matter more. In engineering PhD or technical master’s admissions, RPI can absolutely be taken very seriously because faculty know its strengths. But if the question is strictly prestige on the name alone, without considering major or performance, Yale has the stronger brand by a clear margin.
