Is University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Boston University worth it for the cost?

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UIUC often delivers stronger value for the money, while Boston University can offer a more urban, professionally connected experience that may justify a higher price only in certain situations. UIUC has a particularly strong reputation in fields like engineering, computer science, business, and some sciences, and its cost can be much easier to defend if your expected debt is meaningfully lower. BU benefits from being in Boston, with access to internships, hospitals, research, media, and finance during the school year, but that advantage does not automatically make a much higher bill worth it.

In broad terms, UIUC is more often the safer financial decision. It has a nationally respected name, a large alumni network, strong recruiting in several high-demand majors, and outcomes that are solid enough that many students do not need to pay a premium for a private-school brand. For majors where UIUC is especially well known, the return on investment can be excellent.

BU can be worth the cost, but usually only when the numbers are close enough that you are not taking on heavy extra debt. Its location is a real asset, especially for students who want frequent access to internships during the semester or careers tied to healthcare, communications, public relations, international affairs, or certain business paths. The school also tends to appeal to students who want a city environment instead of a traditional college town.

What would make me hesitate on BU is a large price gap. If BU would require substantially more borrowing than UIUC, the long-term payoff often does not justify that difference unless BU is clearly better for your specific major and career path. A more expensive school is easiest to defend when it creates concrete access you are very likely to use, not just a nicer setting or a somewhat more recognizable name in some regions.

If costs are similar, then the decision can turn on program strength and whether you want Boston’s urban opportunities. If BU is much more expensive, UIUC is usually the smarter investment.
