University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign vs. Penn State for actuarial science: which is the better choice?

I’m a high school senior trying to choose between UIUC and Penn State for actuarial science. Both seem like strong options, but I’m having trouble figuring out which school would give me the better overall path into the field.

I’m especially trying to understand which one has the stronger reputation for actuarial science and better opportunities to prepare for internships and exams.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UIUC has the more established edge specifically in actuarial science, while Penn State can still get you into the field but is more often chosen for the broader Big Ten experience or for cost and personal fit reasons rather than for having the stronger actuarial program itself. UIUC’s actuarial science program is housed in a department with a long-standing reputation in risk, insurance, and quantitative prep, and it is very well known among employers who recruit actuaries. Penn State is respected and has solid business and math resources, but it is not as commonly singled out first for actuarial science in the same way UIUC is.

For reputation and direct preparation, UIUC is the clearer favorite. It has a strong pipeline into actuarial internships, a large alumni network in insurance and consulting, and coursework that aligns well with actuarial exam material. That matters because in this field, passing exams early and landing relevant internships are two of the biggest drivers of outcomes.

Penn State can absolutely work, especially if you are motivated and take advantage of career services, student organizations, and exam prep on your own. But when students ask which school gives the more straightforward actuarial path, UIUC is usually the one that comes up more often among recruiters and families who know the field well. The program’s name carries real weight in this niche area.

I would also look closely at cost, since actuarial science is one of those majors where both schools can lead to a good job, and avoiding unnecessary debt matters. If the price is fairly close, UIUC is the better choice for actuarial science. If Penn State is substantially cheaper, that can be a very reasonable reason to choose it, but purely on program strength, reputation in the field, and preparation for internships and exams, UIUC has the advantage.
