Purdue vs Illinois State University for engineering: which is better for an undergraduate engineering degree?

The biggest practical tradeoff is depth versus scale: Purdue offers a much larger, more established engineering ecosystem with broader employer reach, while Illinois State gives you a smaller university environment but not the same engineering strength or national visibility. For undergraduate engineering specifically, Purdue has a far wider range of engineering majors, much more extensive research infrastructure, and a long-standing reputation with engineering employers. Illinois State is not known as a major engineering destination in the same way, so the academic resources and recruiting pipeline are not comparable.

On academics, Purdue is the stronger option by a clear margin for engineering. Its College of Engineering is one of the university’s signature strengths, and that shows up in course depth, lab facilities, student project teams, faculty activity, and the number of specialized paths available within engineering. If you are still exploring areas like mechanical, aerospace, electrical, civil, or industrial engineering, Purdue gives you many more options and more built-out departments.

For internships and employer perception, Purdue also has the advantage. Large engineering firms know Purdue well, recruit there intentionally, and often have established pipelines for internships, co-ops, and full-time roles. That matters because engineering hiring is often very school- and program-specific, especially for undergraduates trying to get their first internship.

Illinois State can still make sense if cost is significantly lower, or if you strongly prefer a less engineering-intensive campus atmosphere and your intended path aligns with what it offers.
