Purdue vs Michigan for cybersecurity: which is the better choice for undergrad?

I’m trying to decide between Purdue and Michigan for college, and cybersecurity is one of my main interests. I know both schools are strong overall, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one has the better environment for studying cybersecurity as an undergrad.

I’m mainly looking for the school with the stronger program and better opportunities to get into cybersecurity-related classes, projects, and internships.

For undergraduate cybersecurity, Purdue usually has the more direct and established path. It has a dedicated cybersecurity major through the Polytechnic Institute, and tends to make cyber-specific coursework, labs, and student involvement easier to access early in college. If you already know you want cybersecurity rather than a broader CS or engineering route, Purdue is often the cleaner academic fit.

Purdue suits the student who wants cybersecurity to be the center of the degree, not just an interest layered onto something else. For access specifically to cybersecurity classes and projects as an undergrad, Purdue has the edge because the pathway is more explicit. At Michigan, the opportunities are real and high-level, but you may need to navigate a larger system and be more intentional about finding the right professors, labs, and course sequences. Students who thrive in big, decentralized environments often do very well there, but it is less plug-and-play for someone seeking a straightforward cyber track.

On internships, both schools place well, but Purdue’s structure is especially friendly to students who want to build a cyber-focused resume quickly through targeted coursework and applied experience. Michigan can open exceptional doors too, particularly for students aiming at top-tier tech, research, or graduate school routes, but for pure undergraduate cybersecurity focus, Purdue is the one I’d lean toward.
