Purdue or San Diego State for finance: which is the better choice for undergraduate finance?

I’m trying to decide between Purdue and San Diego State for a finance major. Both seem like solid options, but I’m not sure which one would be the stronger choice for getting internships and starting a career after college.

I care most about the overall finance program and how well each school sets students up for jobs in business or finance.

The biggest practical tradeoff is national reach versus regional access. Purdue tends to carry broader name recognition across the Midwest and beyond, while San Diego State is especially well connected in Southern California and can be very effective if you want to build your career there. For finance specifically, that difference matters because internships and first jobs often come through local employer pipelines and alumni networks.

Purdue’s business school gives you a larger university brand and a campus environment with strong recruiting across multiple industries. Even though Purdue is often best known for engineering, that reputation can still help because employers know the school well, and business students benefit from the scale of the university, the alumni base, and the structured recruiting culture. If you want flexibility to work in different regions after graduation, Purdue is likely to travel better.

San Diego State has a real advantage if your goal is to work in San Diego, Orange County, or Los Angeles. Its business programs are well established, and being in Southern California can make semester-time networking and internships more practical than being in West Lafayette. For finance, proximity can be a big deal, especially for internships in wealth management, commercial banking, corporate finance, and real estate-related roles.

If the decision is purely about undergraduate finance strength and broad career setup, I’d lean Purdue. It offers a stronger all-around national platform, and that usually helps with mobility and recruiting breadth. I would choose San Diego State over Purdue only if you know you want to stay in Southern California and want to maximize local internship access during the school year.
