Purdue vs Duke for biomedical engineering: which is better for an undergraduate BME degree?

I’m trying to decide between Purdue and Duke for biomedical engineering and I keep seeing both schools recommended for different reasons. I’m mainly looking at the strength of the BME program itself and how well it prepares students for internships, research, or grad school.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale and style: Purdue gives you a large, engineering-centered environment with broad technical resources and strong industry ties, while Duke offers a smaller, more research-intensive BME experience tied closely to a major medical center. It can prepare students very well for industry and graduate study, and employers know Purdue engineers are well trained. But for BME in particular, the absence of the same kind of embedded academic medical environment is a real difference.

For internships, both can work well, but the routes may look different. Purdue tends to shine through its engineering recruiting network and large alumni base in technical fields. Duke’s advantage is that biomedical opportunities can be more tightly connected to research labs, clinical collaborators, and health-related innovation.

So if the question is narrowly which undergraduate option is stronger specifically for biomedical engineering, I would lean Duke. Purdue is excellent in engineering overall, but Duke is more distinctive in BME itself and usually offers the more directly relevant ecosystem for research, medical applications, and graduate-school preparation.
