Is Purdue or ETH Zurich better for engineering?

For engineering, ETH Zurich has the stronger global academic reputation, especially if you are thinking about rigorous theory, research intensity, and a path that may lead into graduate study or technical work in Europe. Purdue is also highly respected, but it is usually seen as more practical, more industry-connected in the U.S., and easier to navigate if your goal is engineering internships and jobs in the American market. Both can give you excellent training, but they serve somewhat different students and career trajectories.

ETH tends to fit the student who wants an exceptionally math-heavy, scientifically demanding environment and is comfortable with a more intense academic culture. Its engineering education is often viewed as very deep on fundamentals, and the school carries enormous prestige across Europe and internationally in technical fields.

Purdue fits the student who wants a large-scale engineering ecosystem with broad U.S. name recognition, extensive recruiting, and a campus built around engineering as a major identity. It is especially attractive for students who want hands-on project teams, strong ties to American employers, and a more traditional U.S. college experience. In industry settings in the United States, Purdue often has the more immediately useful network and familiarity.

One other big-picture difference is structure and environment. ETH can be less flexible and more academically unforgiving, which some students love because it pushes them hard. Purdue is still very rigorous, but it often feels more legible to students who want campus life, employer pipelines, and clearer access to internships during the degree.
