Purdue vs. Michigan for finance careers: which is better for recruiting and internships?

I’m a high school senior trying to decide between Purdue and Michigan, and I’m interested in finance after college. I know both schools are well respected, but I’m trying to understand which one tends to be stronger for breaking into finance through recruiting and internships.

I’m mainly looking at the overall advantage for finance careers, not specific majors or campus life.

The biggest practical tradeoff is access versus reach: Purdue can still get students into finance, but Michigan tends to offer a much deeper on-campus recruiting pipeline and a stronger built-in network for internships in banking, consulting, and corporate finance. Purdue is well regarded nationally, especially with employers in technical and quantitative areas, but for pure finance recruiting it is not usually operating with the same level of volume or visibility.

If your question is strictly about finance career outcomes, Michigan has the clearer edge. Recruiters from major firms are more consistently present there, and the school’s brand carries more weight in finance circles. That matters most for competitive paths like investment banking, buy-side roles, and some high-demand internships where school pipelines and alumni referrals play a big role.

Purdue is not a bad option at all, especially if you are interested in corporate finance, financial planning, operations-heavy business roles, or finance positions connected to industrial and engineering-driven companies. It can work very well for students who are proactive, network early, and build strong experience on their own. But the path is usually less automatic, and students often need to hustle harder for the same finance-specific opportunities.

So if the decision is based mainly on recruiting and internships for finance, Michigan is the stronger choice. Purdue can absolutely lead to a finance career, but Michigan gives you a better starting platform and more direct access to the kinds of firms and internship channels most finance-focused students are aiming for.
