American can be worth the cost when you plan to use D.C. aggressively from day one. Its location is the main asset, especially for students interested in government, international relations, public policy, communications, journalism, or nonprofit work. The value comes less from the classroom alone and more from how often students can build real experience during the school year through internships and advocacy organizations.

Wake Forest is more often worth a high price if you want strong undergraduate teaching, a close-knit campus culture, and solid outcomes across several fields, including business, finance, pre-med, and some humanities and social sciences. It has a reputation for engaged alumni and good career support, and its smaller, more residential environment can make it easier for some students to build relationships with professors and mentors. That matters if you want a classic campus-centered college experience rather than one built around a city.

A smart rule here is to compare the actual debt you would take on, not just the prestige or vibe. If either option would require heavy borrowing for all four years, especially well beyond federal student loans, it is hard to call that undergraduate degree worth the cost.
