For data science specifically, NC State has an edge in academic depth if you want a foundation that leans more heavily on statistics, math, and computing in a research-university setting. Its surrounding Triangle area gives access to a dense network of tech, biotech, and analytics employers, and the university has long-standing strength in quantitative fields that feed naturally into data science work.

UT Dallas is very compelling if your priority is practical career preparation and internship access during the school year. The school has built a strong reputation in computer science, analytics, and business-adjacent tech areas, and being in a major metro makes it easier to find part-time work, co-ops, and employer contact without needing to leave the city. That matters a lot in a field where projects, internships, and tools often matter as much as the degree title.

I would also weigh student experience. NC State offers the fuller large public university atmosphere, while UT Dallas is often seen as more commuter-influenced and less traditional socially, though that has been changing. For some students that difference affects networking, involvement, and overall satisfaction more than they expect.
