For computer science specifically, Wisconsin usually has the stronger overall national reputation and a broader, more established CS environment. Its program is housed in a large research university with deep faculty resources, strong recruiting, and a wide range of upper-level coursework and research areas. If your main priority is the most widely recognized CS brand and a bigger traditional college experience, Wisconsin has the edge.

Wisconsin tends to fit the student who wants a classic Big Ten campus, a highly visible CS department, and access to a large alumni network spread across many industries. Madison also gives you the feel of a major flagship university, which can matter if you want lots of options outside CS too, whether that is math, data science, research labs, or student organizations tied to tech.

UT Dallas makes the most sense for the student who wants a very career-focused path into tech, especially in Texas. Its location in the Dallas area is a real advantage for internships and industry connections, and the school has built a strong reputation with employers in the region. UTD is often especially attractive for students who value practical opportunities, or want a campus culture that feels more academically centered and less dominated by the traditional big-campus social scene.

Academically, both can get you where you want to go, but the experience is a bit different. Wisconsin may offer the stronger “overall university plus CS department” package, while UT Dallas can be an excellent value play with direct access to a major job market. In practice, a motivated student can succeed from either place, but if cost is similar and you want the more established all-around CS option, I would lean Wisconsin. If UT Dallas is meaningfully cheaper or puts you right where you want to build internships and a career, that can absolutely outweigh the prestige gap.
