UCLA vs. University of Virginia for business: which is better for an undergraduate business career path?

I’m trying to decide between UCLA and the University of Virginia for undergrad, and I’m most interested in business. I know both schools have strong reputations overall, but I’m not sure how they compare for things like recruiting, internship opportunities, and how well they set students up for business careers after graduation.

I’m mainly looking for the better choice if I want a solid business foundation and good job prospects.

UVA is the stronger pick for an undergraduate business career path because it offers a true undergrad business program through the McIntire School of Commerce, and that matters for both recruiting structure and business coursework. UCLA has excellent outcomes too, but it does not have a traditional undergraduate business major in the same way, so students usually build a business-oriented path through economics, business economics, statistics, or other adjacent majors.

The biggest differentiator is direct access to business education. At UVA, McIntire gives you a focused curriculum in finance, marketing, management, IT, and commerce from an undergraduate business school that employers already know well. That tends to make the path more straightforward for students who want business internships and full-time recruiting during college.

Recruiting is another place where UVA has an edge. UCLA benefits from being in Los Angeles and has excellent connections in entertainment, media, tech, and West Coast business more broadly, but the recruiting path can feel a bit less centralized for students specifically seeking a classic undergrad business track.

Internship access depends partly on region. UCLA students can tap into LA during the school year, which is genuinely useful for in-semester internships in industries like entertainment, startups, real estate, and some finance-related roles.

For a student who wants a solid business foundation with the clearest setup for business jobs right after graduation, UVA has the cleaner and more purpose-built platform. UCLA remains a very strong option, especially if you want flexibility or are interested in business-adjacent fields tied to Southern California industries.
