Is William & Mary or Duke worth the cost for an undergraduate degree?

The biggest practical tradeoff is debt versus access. Duke can offer more built-in resources, national visibility, and a broader residential campus experience, but William & Mary can deliver an excellent undergraduate education at a much lower price, especially for Virginia residents. For most students, the extra cost is only worth it if Duke is affordable without heavy borrowing or if you have a very specific reason to benefit from what Duke uniquely offers.

William & Mary is especially strong for undergraduates because of its smaller scale, close faculty access, and serious academic culture. It has a strong reputation in fields like government, history, public policy, economics, and pre-law, and students often get meaningful research and mentorship without competing with large graduate programs in the same way you might elsewhere. If the price gap is large, that matters a lot because undergraduate outcomes are shaped heavily by what you do in college, not just the name on the diploma.

Duke does bring real advantages. It has deeper funding, a larger alumni network with broad national reach, and a campus life that many students find more energetic and resourced. For some students, those differences are meaningful enough to justify paying more, particularly if the net cost ends up manageable after aid.

The key question is not whether Duke is "better" in the abstract. It is whether the incremental benefits are worth the actual dollar difference for your family. If choosing Duke means major loans for you or your parents, William & Mary is usually the smarter undergraduate value. If Duke comes close in net price, or your family can pay the difference comfortably, then Duke can be worth it because its extra opportunities and reach are real.
