Is William & Mary or Colby worth the cost for undergrad?

William & Mary is easier to justify at full price for most students, while Colby makes sense mainly if its financial aid brings the cost close. William & Mary has a long-established national reputation, especially in government, public policy, history, economics, and pre-law pathways, and it offers the resources of a public research university with a strong undergraduate focus. Colby is well regarded, but its value proposition depends more heavily on whether you specifically want a small liberal arts environment and can afford the premium.

One major difference is academic structure and breadth. William & Mary gives you a wider range of departments, more course options, and stronger built-in access to research, internships, and interdisciplinary work across a larger institution. That tends to matter if you are still exploring majors or want flexibility between fields like business-related economics, government, data-oriented work, and the humanities.

Another concrete factor is location and career access. William & Mary benefits from proximity to Richmond, Washington, DC, and a large East Coast alumni network, which is especially useful for internships in politics, consulting, law, education, and public service. Colby is in a much more remote part of Maine. That setting is appealing to some students, but it can make in-semester networking and internship access less convenient.

The college experience is also quite different. Colby offers a more intimate residential liberal arts atmosphere, small classes, and a tight campus community from day one. William & Mary still has strong teaching and close professor relationships, but with more campus activity variety, broader student life, and a somewhat less insulated feel.

For return on investment, I would lean William & Mary unless Colby is significantly cheaper for you or you know you want the specific small liberal arts college experience Colby does especially well.
