Is University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Fordham better for finance?

I’m trying to decide between UIUC and Fordham and want to study finance. I know both have strong reputations in different ways, but I’m not sure which one would be the better choice for getting into finance careers after college.

I’m mostly trying to understand which school would give me the stronger overall path for finance.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: UIUC gives you a larger, more established business-school pipeline with stronger breadth, while Fordham gives you day-to-day proximity to New York finance. For finance specifically, UIUC’s Gies College of Business is the more nationally established undergraduate business platform, with a deeper on-campus recruiting structure and a larger alumni base spread across major employers. Fordham’s clear advantage is location, especially for internships during the school year, networking in Manhattan, and exposure to firms while classes are in session.

If your question is which school offers the stronger overall path for finance, UIUC usually comes out ahead. Gies has a very solid reputation in business, finance, accounting, and related recruiting, and it tends to offer more scale in coursework, student organizations, employer access, and peer network. That matters because finance hiring often depends on repeated exposure to recruiters, alumni, clubs, technical prep, and internship pipelines, not just the name on the diploma.

Fordham is absolutely credible for finance, especially if you are self-directed and want to build connections in New York early. Being in or near Manhattan can make it easier to attend events, meet alumni, and pursue in-semester internships, which can be a real edge for some students. But in terms of pure undergraduate business infrastructure and the consistency of finance outcomes across a larger student base, UIUC is the sturdier option.

I’d lean UIUC, especially if you are in Gies. I’d put Fordham ahead only in the specific situation where being in New York during college, and using that location aggressively for internships and networking, is central to how you want to build your finance career.
