Is Purdue worth it compared to UC Berkeley for engineering?

If you are excited by being near major tech companies, want access to a huge range of advanced labs and faculty, and do well in a fast-paced environment where students are very self-directed, Berkeley can absolutely feel worth it. Its reputation extends beyond engineering too, which matters if you may pivot into adjacent fields like data science, policy, entrepreneurship, or finance.

Purdue fits the student who wants a campus where engineering is central to the school’s identity and where the day-to-day undergraduate experience may feel more manageable. A lot of students are drawn to Purdue because engineering is not just one strength among many there, it is a defining part of the institution. That often translates into strong employer pipelines, lots of peers in technical majors, and a practical, grounded culture around internships and careers. If you want a classic college campus and a lower-friction living environment than Berkeley’s urban setting, Purdue has real appeal.

For value, cost matters a lot. If Berkeley would be significantly more expensive, especially out of state, Purdue can be the smarter overall deal because employers already take Purdue engineering very seriously. If Berkeley is close in cost, its brand, location, and cross-disciplinary opportunities can justify the difference for many students.
