Is Purdue harder to get into than MIT for undergraduate admissions?

The biggest practical tradeoff is selectivity versus scale: MIT admits a very small class through an intensely selective process across all majors, while Purdue enrolls a much larger undergraduate population and, although some programs are quite competitive, the university as a whole is far more attainable. In plain terms, MIT is much harder to get into for undergraduate admission. Purdue is a respected, well-known STEM school, but it does not operate at the same level of admissions difficulty overall.

MIT’s applicant pool is self-selecting and extremely strong, and the school has very limited space. It also reviews applicants in a highly holistic way, looking for exceptional academic performance plus unusual depth, initiative, and fit with its culture. Even very accomplished students are often denied simply because there are far more qualified applicants than seats.

Purdue is selective, especially in areas like engineering, computer science, and flight, but it is still much more accessible than MIT overall. One reason students sometimes get confused is that Purdue’s most popular majors can be competitive enough that strong applicants should not treat them as safeties. Still, that is different from MIT-level selectivity, where nearly every applicant is already among the strongest students in the pool.

For building a college list, it makes sense to treat MIT as a high-reach school for basically everyone. Purdue can range from target to reach depending on your major, academic profile, and residency status, but it is not in the same admissions category as MIT.
