Is Purdue or UC San Diego harder to get into?

UC San Diego is harder to get into overall. It draws a very large applicant pool, uses a highly selective UC admissions process, and has especially intense competition for popular programs like engineering, computer science, and biology. Purdue is also selective, particularly for majors such as engineering, computer science, and nursing, but in an overall head-to-head comparison, UC San Diego is typically the more difficult admit.

One big reason is applicant volume and demand. UC San Diego benefits from the UC system’s broad visibility, the single UC application, and very strong interest from both California residents and out-of-state students. That creates a deeper, more crowded pool across many majors, not just a few standout programs.

Another difference is how selectivity shows up across the university. At Purdue, the admissions challenge is often more concentrated in specific direct-admit programs, especially within engineering and computing. UC San Diego tends to feel more competitive across the board, including in many science and pre-health oriented areas that attract large numbers of high-achieving applicants.

Residency and process also matter. For California residents, UC San Diego is a common target for many of the state’s strongest applicants, which raises the bar. Purdue can still be tough, but it is often a bit more accessible overall, especially outside its most in-demand majors.
