Syracuse vs NYU for public relations: which is the better choice for a PR career?
I’m trying to decide between Syracuse and NYU for public relations, and I’m mainly thinking about which school would give me the stronger path into the field. I want to study PR in a place that offers good internships, hands-on experience, and alumni connections.
Both schools seem strong in different ways, so I’m trying to understand which one is generally better for someone aiming for a career in public relations.

The biggest practical tradeoff is this: Syracuse offers the more clearly built-out undergraduate PR training, while NYU gives you New York City access every day. Syracuse’s S.I. Newhouse School is one of the most recognized names in communications, and its public relations curriculum is especially established at the undergraduate level. NYU can open doors through location and internships during the semester, but it is not as singularly centered on undergraduate PR as Newhouse.
For pure PR preparation, Syracuse has a real edge because the program is designed for students who know they want communications and PR early. Newhouse has a strong reputation among agencies, media companies, and corporate communications teams, and students usually get plenty of hands-on work through student media, campaigns, and client-based experiences. The alumni network in communications is also a major asset and tends to be unusually loyal.
NYU’s main advantage is proximity. Being in Manhattan makes it easier to intern during the academic year with agencies, brands, nonprofits, entertainment companies, and media organizations. That matters in PR, where networking and real experience often translate directly into first-job opportunities. If you are highly proactive, organized, and ready to build your own path quickly, NYU’s setting can be powerful.
The caution with NYU is that access is not the same as structure. A student who thrives there often has to be very intentional about seeking out PR-specific opportunities, mentors, and coursework. Syracuse tends to make that path more legible from the start, especially for someone who wants a focused communications identity rather than a broader urban-university experience.
If the question is which school is better specifically for a PR career, I would lean Syracuse. For undergraduate public relations, Newhouse is the more targeted and consistently recognized launchpad.
