Is Syracuse University or NYU better for a career in film?

The biggest practical tradeoff is that NYU puts you in New York City, with far more immediate access to internships, freelance crews, screenings, and working alumni, while Syracuse offers a more traditional campus experience with a smaller, more contained creative community. For a student focused specifically on directing, NYU Tisch’s Film & Television program has especially deep industry visibility and a location that makes relationship-building possible during the academic year. Syracuse can still provide serious production training, but students often need to be more intentional about using summers, alumni outreach, and trips to New York or Los Angeles to build the same level of day-to-day industry contact.

At NYU, directing students benefit from being surrounded by actors, writers, editors, cinematographers, and student productions across Tisch, as well as access to the city’s independent-film culture. The program’s alumni network is extensive, and New York makes it easier to pursue internships or production-assistant work while enrolled. The downside is that the environment can be expensive, intense, and highly self-directed; proximity to the industry only helps when you actively make work and maintain relationships.

Syracuse’s film-related opportunities span the College of Visual and Performing Arts and the Newhouse School, depending on your program. Its strengths include hands-on production, accessible faculty mentorship, student crews, and a campus setting where it may be easier to take leadership roles on sets early. Syracuse can be particularly appealing if you want room to experiment across film, television, media, writing, or communications rather than a purely industry-immersive New York experience.

For directing with the strongest built-in path to film-industry connections, NYU is the more advantageous choice. Syracuse is a credible option when its cost is substantially lower, when you prefer a campus-based undergraduate experience, or when you are prepared to create your own off-campus networking plan alongside strong on-campus production work.
