UMass Amherst vs University College London for finance careers
I’m trying to decide between UMass Amherst and UCL and I’m mainly interested in breaking into finance after college. UCL seems like it has a stronger international reputation, but UMass is much more affordable and still has a solid business school.
For someone who wants to work in finance, how do these two schools compare in terms of recruiting opportunities, alumni network, and how employers view the degree?

For finance careers, UCL has the clearer edge if you want to recruit in London, Europe, or internationally, while UMass Amherst is the more practical option if your goal is U.S. finance and the price difference is substantial. UCL is a globally recognized university in one of the world’s main financial centers, which matters for employer familiarity and access to internships during the school year. UMass Amherst’s Isenberg School is well regarded in the U.S., but it does not sit in the same geographic pipeline to major finance employers that UCL has with the City of London.
Location is the biggest differentiator. UCL students can realistically build term-time experience, networking, and employer exposure with banks, asset managers, and finance firms in London, and that proximity carries real value in finance recruiting. UMass Amherst is farther from New York and Boston, so opportunities are there, but they usually require more intentional travel, alumni outreach, and summer-focused recruiting rather than easy in-city access during the semester.
The alumni and employer network also work differently. UCL’s network is broader and more international, which is especially useful for global finance, cross-border roles, and employers that recruit from highly recognized overseas universities. UMass has a solid domestic alumni base, especially through Isenberg, and that can be very helpful for regional finance roles, corporate finance, accounting-related paths, and some placements into larger U.S. firms, but it is not as naturally global in reach.
Employer perception depends a lot on where you want to start your career. In the UK and many international markets, UCL is likely to carry more immediate prestige and brand recognition. In the U.S., UMass Amherst is easier for employers to contextualize, and avoiding much higher debt can matter more than school name, especially early in a finance career where internships, technical skills, and networking often decide outcomes.
One more practical point is work authorization. If you are not already authorized to work in the UK or U.S., the better school on paper can still become the harder path in practice because recruiting is tied to visa realities. That makes the decision less about abstract reputation and more about where you realistically plan to build your first job pipeline.
