Is Rutgers or Indiana better for finance careers?
I’m trying to decide between Rutgers and Indiana and I want to study finance. I’m mainly interested in which school gives students a stronger path into finance careers after college.
I know both schools are respected, but I’m having trouble telling which one has the better reputation and recruiting opportunities for finance.

Indiana has the clearer edge for finance careers, mainly because the Kelley School of Business has a stronger national reputation in undergraduate business and a more established pipeline into finance recruiting. For students targeting investment banking, corporate finance, asset management, or high-level analyst roles, Kelley is typically the school that draws broader employer attention. Its alumni network in business is also especially deep and active, which matters a lot in finance hiring.
One big differentiator is the business school structure itself. Indiana’s Kelley School is a major draw on its own, and many employers recruit there specifically because of Kelley’s long-standing brand in business education. Rutgers Business School is solid and respected, especially in the Northeast, but it does not carry the same nationwide finance-specific pull that Kelley does.
Recruiting access is another important difference. Indiana tends to offer a more built-out on-campus recruiting ecosystem for finance, along with well-known student organizations, workshops, and career preparation that are tightly connected to finance employers. Rutgers does benefit from proximity to New York City, which can help with internships and networking, but location alone does not automatically outweigh the recruiting machine and alumni reach that Indiana has built.
Rutgers becomes more compelling if cost is meaningfully lower for you, especially as an in-state option for New Jersey residents, or if you want to be close to NYC during the school year. But if the question is purely which school gives the stronger path and reputation for finance careers, Indiana is the more convincing choice.
