Is UC Berkeley participating in March Madness this year?
I'm a huge college basketball fan and I'm trying to figure out which schools made it to March Madness this season. Does anyone know if UC Berkeley's men's or women's basketball teams are in the tournament for 2024?
I'm a junior considering applying to Cal and I'd love to know how their basketball program is doing. I've read a bit about their history, but I'm not sure how they're performing currently. Any info or updates about their season would be really helpful!
Also, if anyone knows if campus gets super hyped for March Madness when Cal makes it, could you share your experience? That atmosphere sounds fun.

For the 2024 season, UC Berkeley’s men's and women's basketball teams did not make it to the NCAA March Madness tournament. The men’s team has been rebuilding after a series of challenging seasons and did not qualify for this year’s event. The women’s team also did not secure a spot in the tournament this season.
Historically, Cal has had moments of basketball glory—especially notable are the men's national championship in 1959 and several tournament appearances over the years. The women's team also reached the Final Four in 2013, which was a huge moment for the campus. These successes tend to energize the campus community and create a strong sense of school spirit, especially when the teams are competitive and get selected for March Madness.
When Cal does punch its ticket to the tournament, there’s definitely a buzz around campus. Students gather to watch games, and sometimes there are on-campus viewing parties, especially if the team is expected to go far. It’s a time when school pride is especially visible, with students wearing blue and gold, and you might hear the Cal band playing across Sproul Plaza.
If team spirit, especially around basketball, is important to your college experience, it’s worth keeping an eye on how the program develops in the coming years. Cal is in a tough Pac-12 conference, so there’s always hope the program will rebuild and make another tournament run in the near future. Even when the teams aren’t in March Madness, the overall campus atmosphere is active and spirited, with lots of support for all sports and student organizations. If you end up at Cal, you’ll find plenty of ways to tap into the campus energy—especially when the Bears start roaring back in basketball!
