Is Fordham or WashU better for pre-med?

WashU is the stronger option for pre-med. Its access to a major academic medical center, extensive undergraduate research, and a very established pre-health ecosystem make it especially attractive for students aiming at medical school. Fordham can work well too, particularly for students who want New York City and a Jesuit liberal arts environment, but WashU offers more built-in advantages for this path.

One big differentiator is proximity to medicine itself. WashU undergraduates benefit from close ties to WashU Medicine and Barnes-Jewish Hospital, which creates a deep pipeline for research, clinical exposure, physicians to shadow, and medically related volunteering. That kind of infrastructure matters because pre-med students need sustained experiences, not just classes.

Advising is another area where WashU stands out. It has a long-established pre-health advising system and a campus culture where many students are pursuing medicine, so the advising, committee processes, and course planning tend to be very practiced. At Fordham, advising can still be solid, but the overall pre-med apparatus is not as central to the university’s identity in the same way.

On staying competitive, the picture is mixed. WashU’s science courses are rigorous and you will be surrounded by many high-achieving students, so earning top grades is not easy. But the payoff is that the school is well known by medical schools and offers unusually strong opportunities to build the research and clinical profile that med admissions value. Fordham may feel somewhat less intense in certain settings, and some students do well there precisely because they can stand out more, but it usually takes more self-direction to assemble the same level of pre-med opportunity.

Research breadth is also hard to ignore. At WashU, it is common for undergraduates to get involved in biomedical, public health, neuroscience, and translational projects relatively early. Fordham has research and NYC hospital access, but WashU’s combination of campus-based labs and medical center integration is simply more seamless for a pre-med student.
