Is University of Richmond or American University more fun for undergrads?

For most undergrads looking for a more traditional, self-contained college social scene, University of Richmond usually feels more fun day to day. It has a residential campus, stronger school-spirit energy, and a weekend culture that is more centered on other students actually being around. American University can be engaging too, but the vibe is often less about campus buzz and more about taking advantage of Washington, DC.

Richmond tends to suit the student who wants campus life to do more of the work for them. Because it is a more enclosed campus and many students stay plugged into school-based activities, it often feels easier to find social events, club involvement, and a stronger sense that the student body shares the same space and rhythm. Division I athletics also help with spirit, even if Richmond is not the kind of school where sports dominate everything.

American is more appealing for the student who defines fun as access, independence, and city energy. A lot of the appeal comes from internships, restaurants, museums, neighborhoods, political events, and the fact that students can leave campus and do something interesting pretty easily. The tradeoff is that campus itself is sometimes described as quieter or more diffuse on weekends, since people scatter across DC or focus heavily on internships and off-campus plans.

If your idea of a good college experience includes building your own fun in a major city and being around students who are career-focused and outward-looking, American can feel more exciting than Richmond in a different way.
