Is University of Richmond or the University of Michigan better for pre-med preparation?

I’m trying to decide between University of Richmond and the University of Michigan, and I’m interested in pre-med. I know both schools have different campus sizes and vibes, but I’m mainly wondering which one is generally stronger for preparing students for med school.

I’m looking at things like access to advising, research, internships, and how well the environment supports pre-med students.

The biggest practical tradeoff is scale: Michigan offers far more research, hospital, and course options, while Richmond gives you a smaller, more personal pre-med environment with easier access to professors and advising. For pre-med specifically, Michigan benefits from being tied to a major academic medical center and a huge research ecosystem. Richmond, though, is known for close faculty relationships, undergraduate focus, and a campus structure that can make it easier to stand out and get guidance early.

If your top priority is sheer opportunity, Michigan has the edge. You would have access to extensive biomedical research, clinical settings connected to Michigan Medicine, a wide range of science departments, and a large alumni network in medicine. That matters for pre-med because research positions, shadowing, advanced coursework, and specialized student organizations are all more abundant.

Richmond’s advantage is support and access. At a smaller university, intro science classes and the pre-health process can feel less anonymous, and students often find it easier to build mentoring relationships that lead to strong recommendation letters. Richmond also has good advising and solid outcomes for motivated pre-med students, but you may need to be more proactive in piecing together clinical exposure off campus than you would at Michigan.

The environment matters too. Michigan’s pre-med culture can feel intense simply because there are so many ambitious students, and navigating a large university takes initiative. Richmond can feel more manageable and personal, which is valuable if you learn best with structure and direct faculty attention.

For pure pre-med preparation, Michigan is the stronger platform because of its medical center, research depth, and volume of opportunities. Richmond is the better pick only if you know you will thrive much more in a smaller, closer-knit setting and are willing to trade some institutional scale for more individualized support.
