Purdue vs Georgia Tech for aerospace engineering: which is better for undergrad?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and keep coming back to Purdue and Georgia Tech for aerospace engineering. Both seem really strong, but I’m having trouble figuring out which one is the better overall choice for an undergraduate student.

I’m mainly trying to understand the difference in reputation, internship access, and how each program feels for someone who wants to study aerospace seriously.

The biggest practical tradeoff is campus environment tied to opportunity: Georgia Tech puts you in Atlanta, which can make networking, co-ops, and industry exposure feel more immediate, while Purdue offers one of the most established aerospace undergraduate cultures in the country with a huge engineering ecosystem built right around that major. Both have excellent reputations in aerospace, both are heavily recruited by major employers, and neither will limit you if you perform well.

For reputation in aerospace specifically, Purdue has a particularly deep legacy. Its aeronautics and astronautics program is one of the most recognizable undergraduate aerospace programs, and that matters because the field already knows how rigorous it is. Georgia Tech is also highly respected, especially across engineering more broadly, and it can carry slightly wider brand strength in some general tech and interdisciplinary settings.

For internship access, Georgia Tech has an edge in location and co-op culture. Being in Atlanta helps with year-round connections, and Tech students often benefit from nearby employers, research labs, and a strong professional pipeline. Purdue is not lacking here at all though. Its engineering career fairs are enormous, aerospace employers recruit there consistently, and the alumni network in aviation, defense, and space is very real.

In terms of how the program feels, Purdue often comes across as classic big-engineering, hands-on, aerospace-centered, and very undergraduate-friendly in identity. Georgia Tech can feel faster-paced, more urban, and a bit more intense across the board, with strong crossover into computing, robotics, materials, and systems work that can be useful in modern aerospace.

If your priority is the purest undergraduate aerospace identity, Purdue has the slight edge. If you want aerospace within a more urban, cross-disciplinary, internship-rich setting, Georgia Tech is extremely compelling. Between the two, I’d give Purdue a narrow nod for undergrad aerospace specifically, but not by enough to outweigh cost, fit, or where you believe you’ll do your best work.
