Which is better for return on investment: University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign or Purdue?

I’m trying to narrow down my college list and I keep seeing both UIUC and Purdue mentioned as strong value schools. I’m mostly thinking about long-term return on investment, like whether the cost of attending is worth it compared with outcomes after graduation.

I know both schools are well respected, so I’m trying to understand which one tends to give students better value overall.

For return on investment, UIUC and Purdue are both excellent, but Purdue often comes out ahead for students who care most about keeping total cost down while still getting strong outcomes. Purdue has built a reputation around relatively restrained tuition, especially compared with many other major public research universities, and its engineering, computer science, and business-adjacent fields place very well. UIUC also delivers outstanding outcomes, particularly in engineering, computer science, and accountancy, but for many students the price can be higher enough that the ROI calculation becomes less obvious.

Purdue tends to make the most sense for a student who wants a nationally respected degree with a strong payoff and is watching cost closely. Its career pipeline is especially strong in engineering and technical majors, and employers know the school well. If you are likely to pay close to full price at both schools, Purdue often has the cleaner value argument because lower cost can matter as much as prestige once the outcomes are already strong.

UIUC fits the student who is willing to pay more because the specific program is worth it. In computer science, engineering, and accountancy, UIUC has exceptional brand strength and recruiting power, and in some fields that extra edge can absolutely pay off. For an Illinois resident, UIUC can also look much more attractive on ROI because in-state pricing changes the equation a lot.

The biggest factor is not the school name by itself but your major and your net price. A Purdue engineering admit may see better value than a UIUC admit paying much more for a similar outcome, while a UIUC CS or accountancy student could reasonably decide the added cost is justified.
