Is University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign or Ohio State better for a business major?

UIUC has the edge for business overall, especially if you are weighing academic reputation and employer recognition most heavily. Gies College of Business is especially well known for accountancy, finance, and analytics-related strengths, and UIUC benefits from a very strong pipeline into Chicago and Midwest employers. It also sits inside a university with exceptional quantitative departments, which matters if you may want to combine business with data, economics, or technology.

One important differentiator is the business school itself. Gies has a particularly strong national reputation in several core business areas, and that can matter for internships, alumni connections, and how recruiters initially view the program. UIUC also tends to appeal to students who want a more academically intense environment with strong support for business students interested in consulting, finance, supply chain, or accounting.

The other major difference is career geography and network shape. Ohio State’s Fisher College of Business is very solid and benefits from an enormous alumni base, especially in Ohio and other large corporate markets, but UIUC often has a stronger pull with employers in Chicago. For a business student, that can be a meaningful advantage because Chicago offers deep access to finance, consulting, accounting, and corporate internship opportunities during the school year and after graduation.

A third factor is campus and student experience. Ohio State is larger in a big-city setting with classic Big Ten energy, broad school spirit, and a huge alumni footprint, which some students find especially valuable for networking and overall college life. UIUC is in more of a college-town environment, but many students prefer that because the academic and recruiting ecosystem can feel more focused.

Cost should still matter quite a bit. If Ohio State is meaningfully cheaper for you, Fisher is absolutely strong enough that the price difference could outweigh UIUC’s advantage. But on business strength alone, UIUC comes out ahead.
